The design of the Samsung SyncMaster 2233SW is the same as any comparable LCD Samsung’s SyncMaster: shiny black with a glossy black finish for the bezel and stand. The screen itself is only 2.8-inches thick at the thickest point and all controls and power button located on the side of the screen. There are no speakers in the screen and on the back, VGA and DVI inputs but no HDMI. The holder can rotate the monitor back and forth for minor adjustments, but it should be placed as close to eye level as possible. There is no vertical adjustment allowed by the state, however, but this is usual with the latest Samsung SyncMaster monitors.

As mentioned in the intro, this monitor has a native HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and measures 21.5-inch widescreen with 16:9 aspect ratio. The contrast ratio is 15000:1, which means it leaves deep blacks and vibrant whites. The colors are very vivid and the picture looked great under normal circumstances. The widescreen aspect ratio allows users to do much of the screen “real estate”, which means that you have many different windows open once and they look at the same time. Should we also mention that the display itself is not glossy, which is much better for circumstances where overhead lights that otherwise would create glare on a glossy screen.

The on-screen menu is activated by a button on the right side of the monitor and you have the usual options, including brightness, contrast, etc. There is also an institution called MagicBright, which allows you a few custom settings: Internet, Gaming , Text and Custom. The menus themselves are very easy to navigate, unlike some other menus on other monitors. Looking at the text on this monitor appeared very sharp and colors were accurate and vibrant.

When fast moving content, there is no visible marks or fragments due to a lagging response time. The Samsung SyncMaster 2233SW has a 5 millisecond response time, which means that the pixels are able to quickly innovate to display moving objects with clear edges. Gaming looks very good on this monitor, even fast-moving 3D games.

One thing we were disappointed with the lack of an HDMI input since this monitor Samsung advertises as “full HD”. It can, as we said, give the HD native resolution of 1920×1080, but it’s not true high-definition HDMI and without your input.

The LED-backlit discussed the next step forward in desktop TFTs quite some time, and Samsung’s latest gives us an opportunity to see how it works in a mainstream consumer model. The XL2370 is a SyncMaster 23IN LCD Samsung with the usual glossy black finish and thin neck stand, and behind the 1080p panel is a 250cd/m2 LED backlight.

With lots of 350cd/m2 and 400cd/m2 even models available that figure is not impressive, but the technology has its strengths. It is efficient, drawing less power (31W on the desktop) and produce less heat than CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent), making the body of the monitor to be thinner than usual. But the more noticeable benefit is the increased contrast, as the LED backlight can basically be reduced to zero for a completely black pixel.

Connecting it to our test PC and incite DisplayMate, the XL2370 not jump out as any other masters of the previous sync. Indeed, the black level was a bit bluish and uneven, while the colors were muted a bit more lively next models. But images and text were sharp, gradients were perfectly smooth and of course there was no backlight bleeding on the edges.

Video clips and games looked very good, but we were aware that we do not push Samsung to limit it to the monitor we could 5,000,000:1 ridiculous “Mega” dynamic contrast ratio. The result was like any previous dynamic contrast adjustment we’ve seen, but increased to eleven.

Dark scenes got darker and bright scenes become even lighter, to the extent that some scenes were actually variable headache-inducing. And it seemed like how dark it might look: the opening scene of Wall-E had schizophrenic flicker when it tried to work out what the brightness space should be, a response test with a white box bouncing around a black background saw the backlight completely off.

Granted, it is an extremely attractive TFT in terms of design, with a glowing touch panel and a transparent edge of the ring, and the choice of DVI and HDMI ports on the back is a good idea. The power supply is external, which helps to keep the thickness.

With a dynamic contrast disabled, this is the only practical way of using this screen, you big advantages are the reduction of the size and power consumption. And while certainly attractive, they are hardly enough to put a price that is a good 70 pounds more than excellent SM2494HM Samsung’s justifiable.
