Each “Splendid” mode offers preset brightness, contrast and color saturation levels that are optimized for specific applications. The H242H did a great job of displaying HD content in 1080p. I watched a Blu-ray disc of Resident Evil: Extinction in its entirety and was impressed by the panel motion handling performance and overall image quality. Although the error was not serious enough gray to bright colors out of whack right, there is a slight loss of detail on my test shots and made it impossible to distinguish between the two lightest shades of gray on the 64-Step Gray Scale Test.

Dark gray performance was much better, however. Each gray level of 64-step grayscale test was well defined and uniformly scaled to the darkest hue. Acer H233H struggled with this part of the test, but both monitors were able to display small text and clearly legible, even to the smallest font (5.3 points).

ASUS H242H is a medium sized HD screen offered at a price that is not empty your wallet, and its performance will meet most die-hard gamers and video enthusiasts. There are better-performing monitors out there, such as the HP LP2275w, which comes with a built-in USB hub and a very flexible, but that will cost you about $ 130 more, and it can not handle games and movies, but also as H242H.

The problem is that the default settings, measured black value of HP 0.53cd/m2 level remains fairly static when you adjust the brightness, so the contrast gets worse as the panel dimmer reduction. Increase the contrast to 90 helps immeasurably, though, to improve the black level considerably and keeping the brightness constant contrast ratio is reduced.

With 16:9 panels showing cheaper, the cost of 16:10, 1920 x 1200 resolution panel inevitably makes it look poor value compared to some of the competition 23IN. But if you crave the extra space on your desk and have the money, do not be discouraged: the HP ZR24w is a serious contender.

Performance

Performance was a mixed bag. The 2159m has a good job of displaying each of the 25 intensity levels on the DisplayMate color scales test, and color swatches of color purity test were uniform and well defined. However, grayscale performance was a different story, in addition to color errors, the panel had trouble displaying the darkest and lightest shades of gray on the 64-Step Gray Scale Test. If you need a higher degree of accuracy grayscale for things like photo editing, the HP LP2275w is a better, albeit more expensive choice. I also noticed a line of backlight bleed along the top of the screen. The seepage is barely noticeable for the most part, but a distraction when viewing dark scenes film and gaming. On the plus side, small text was clean and very easy to read.

Watching the action thriller “Shooter” on a Blu-ray disc is a treat. The 2159m produced a sharp image at 1080p, which was relatively free of motion errors, except a few stray artefacts. Viewing angles were good, although some minor color shifts at about 160-degrees, which is normal for a TN panel.
