We have seen enough to come all-in-One (AIO) PC by our laboratory in recent months to clean up the desktop half of North America. And if it really comes down, are trying, most of them, adding all kinds of design elements and super-charged components, topple the king of the all-in-one: the Apple iMac. As much as other manufacturers try but Apple just keeps coming out swinging, each iteration of its iMac besting the last. With its new line of iMacs, Apple has a great overhaul of the already powerful insides of the iMac is not the increase in prices. This is a victory for the Mac faithful and potential first-time buyers alike.
With the new update of the iMac, Apple gets each member of the Signature line of desktops, an updated and more powerful graphics card and CPU. Apple now offers two basic models with a 21.5-inch screen. One of them, the $ 1199 unit we tested, with a 3.06 GHz Intel Core i3 CPU, a 500GB hard drive and an ATI Radeon HD 4670 graphics card with 256 MB of discrete memory. For $ 300 more, you can use a 3.2 GHz Intel Core discrete i3 CPU, a 1TB hard drive and an ATI Radeon HD 5670 graphics card with 512MB Memory Upgrade. The screens on both 21.5-inch models feature a 1920 x1, 080 native resolution and 4 GB of RAM.

The other two basic models have beautiful iMac 27-inch screens. The low-end 27-inch model will set you back $ 1,699 and has all the same specifications as the high-end 21.5-inch iMac, except that there is a best-in-class 2560 x1, 440 native screen resolution Sport . For $ 300 more, you can upgrade a 2.8 GHz Intel Core i5-CPU and an ATI Radeon HD 5750 graphics card with 1 GB of memory.
As already mentioned, these four configurations based models, so some of the components at the time of purchase are changeable, depending on which model you are viewing. The only thing you can do to update our test model at the time of purchase is the promotion of the RAM to 8 GB. The other models offer different hard drives, CPU and video upgrades for a price, of course.

Unlike the interior and the exterior of the new iMac, just the same as the previous version. But that’s not a bad thing. Like all Apple products, the iMac design simple and minimalist. It is in the unibody aluminum enclosure, the MacBook Pro and Mac Mini lines boast now, so the whole family Mac encases a uniform appearance. The reverse side of audio in and out jacks, four USB ports and connections for FireWire, Mini DisplayPort, Ethernet and Power.
On the right side of the screen, a SD card reader (now supports the poor) and a slot-loading optical drive (which is no Blu-ray reader, something that Apple is still one of the functions of their systems, a disgrace with this beautiful screen). Other than the power button that sits demurely on the lower back left side of the body, nothing mars the iMac’s slim back panel.

The minimalist design helps your eyes on the gorgeous 21.5-inch LCD, which is glossy and LED-backlit display. Its widescreen aspect ratio (to 16-9) 1,920 x1 make, 080 native resolution for impressive HD experience to. Like all glossy screens, takes this a bit of glare from ambient light, but the colors represent good, and not surprisingly, we saw no motion blur when viewing images. But looking at this beautiful screen, especially outside of the iMac (except for the Blu-ray player) is an HDMI port. That would be useful for easily connecting a games console.
The iMac body sits beautifully on an aluminum base, a stable for the rest of the body is available to anchor. The screen is hinged, and the adjustment movement is refined and smooth. There is no tilt, but we did not know where to move the unit unduly difficult, despite its size. In any case, not so important as the screen viewing angle to great wherever you sit in front of him. (Apple claims that the iMac LCD has a 178-degree viewing angle, which seems credible, from our observations;. Even at extreme angles, we have not noticed any major issues with off-center readability, beyond the typical LCDs)

The iMac comes with the Magic Mouse, which works almost like the touchpad on a laptop. Looks like a tiny spaceship, the Mighty Mouse has no keys. (Or rather, like its MacBook Touch Pad counterpart, there is a large button.) Most of the top of the mouse is touch sensitive, so you can all sorts of cool tricks that will mimic the capabilities of laptop touch from Apple pads. Scroll up and down on Web sites simply by dashing your finger up and down on top of the mouse. Scroll through the screens in Safari or iPhoto for by brushing two fingers left to right. Hold down the Ctrl key and scroll to zoom with a finger in or out of the screen.
While the Magic Mouse takes a little getting used to. When we first started using it, we had a difficult time keeping the mouse button instead, especially if swiping two fingers. But if you use it for a while, we think you’ll wonder how you ever dealt with the inconveniences of a conventional mouse. Granted, we would have wished that the two-finger pinching and dragging gestures that work on MacBooks and the iPhone have, but this is definitely a step forward in terms of mouse technology.

Speaking of the Magic Mouse, announced the release of its Apple Trackpad Magic on the same day like this updated iMac. This innovative new device raises the touchpad from the MacBook Pro notebook, increasing its size and makes it available to a desktop PC. Unfortunately, Apple did not ship the new iMac with a Magic trackpad, separately, it costs $ 69. (If you decide it’s time that you buy your iMac purchase, it will arrive in the box with the Magic Mouse.) Seeing as Apple shipped its last update mouse, Mighty Mouse, with its new iMacs when they have been published, we are disappointed to have to pay extra for the trackpad.
Together with the Magic Mouse, the iMac also ships with a wireless Bluetooth keyboard that minimalism brings a new level. About three-quarters the size of a conventional keyboard (thanks to the elimination of the numeric keypad), it is almost completely flat to a round area in the back that holds the battery and causes the keyboard to rise slightly in the rear. Despite its small body, we did not find the keyboard hard to type. Like the mouse, the keyboard is a striking similarity with with Apple’s laptops, with the Chiclet-style keys increases only slightly from the body of the keyboard.

The other input device, Apple offers its built-in iSight camera (built on top of the screen bezel) is working seriously for an integrated camera. We noticed very little refresh delay, and it reproduces a picture in low light conditions. There is also the possibility of a remote control that will cost you $ 19 extra. (Again something that we think Apple should have thrown in the box, because the system is the $ 1,199 base price. ‘S) with a slim body and only two buttons and a scroll wheel, it looks like a super-thin iPod Nano.
How could from his bump in processor performance is to be expected, the iMac blows its predecessor (and much of its competition) out of the water in our performance tests. In our Cinebench test, which emphasizes a specific processor cores to measure all the raw CPU power, the iMac scored 8741, besting the previous iMac score of 2,200 points. But a competing AIO, the Gateway One ZX6900-01e, easily surpassed the iMac by over 400 points (not a big difference, but no less remarkable). The iMac defeated the Lenovo IdeaCentre A300, however. It plays the same AIO score of 4,000 points made.

On our iTunes test, where we encode 11 standard audio tracks from MP3 to AAC format, the iMac’s time of exactly 3 minutes clearly beats the Gateway One and the IdeaCentre A300. Given these test results combined with the unbeatable style of the iMac, we had little trouble deciding that AIO would bring us, if this type of media-crunching tasks, our main concern.
The graphics card of the 2010 iMac line show a nice improvement over the previous generation. Our test model with the ATI Radeon HD 4670, which is coupled with 256 MB of discrete memory, a severe blow from the integrated NVIDIA GeForce 9400M chip in the 2009 iteration of this model shipped. This, then gaming on the base-model iMac a viable option. We spent some time editing home video in iMovie and found the graphics to stand up and to this end. Overall, the video-playback performance was solid. We watched a DVD copy of The Bourne Identity, the film appears crisp and clear, without visible motion blur. (We would like to have a watching Blu-ray Disc, but unfortunately there is no support for it.) MOV video files that we shot at playing our cheap Canon point-and-shoot camera again without interference.

The iMac comes with Mac OS X Snow Leopard operating system (version 10.6), which includes iLife ’09 (made from the excellent iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, iWeb and GarageBand application) bundles. iLife ’09, as we have noted, when we checked the software separately last year, is a very useful and consider outclassed all-purpose media consumption and creation suite that everything comes together in a rule with a PC. The iMac also comes with a one-year warranty and 90 days of free telephone support. (An extended warranty covers the system AppleCare for another two years, it costs 169 $ extra not factored in the cost of our test unit.)
With the current flood of all-in-one PCs in the market, the iMac is facing stiffer competition than it has ever seen. With the latest iteration, though, Apple proves that it is not willing to let the competition take over anytime soon. With its more-muscular interior and consistently stylish exterior, is the iMac to the cool, smart, AIO, all other models will envy.
