Logitech G19 Gaming Keyboard Review

Gamers form very personal attachment to their keyboards and mice, as finding the perfect peripheral can positively influence the relationship between the triumphant victories and humiliating defeats. After all, if you have to drop several grand on a new gaming PC, or even several hundred to one you have an upgrade, it is not advisable to include an accessory that can give you an edge on the latest interactive blockbuster buy?
However, for the most demanding players, we are not sure Logitech G19 is the right choice when it comes to cutting-edge keyboards. The device comes with features including an integrated LCD display, which take into account for a large part of her $ 200 price tag. But this fancy display little more than striking bling. We also have mashed a lot of directors that a lot better than it felt in our mitts, and sell for a fraction of the price.
In our opinion, no matter how much or how little, a keyboard costs if not solid feel at our fingertips, and the G19 keys if they encounter floating on a bowl of mashed potatoes. There is enough resistance that we never accidentally activated by a button just resting our fingers on the keyboard, but only moderate pressure on her abdomen caused the entire structure to bend.

Logitech added a new test, while increasing the size of the G19 only slightly. It is approximately 1.5 inches wide and 1.75 inches deep (the LCD projects from the top) than the typical keyboard. Snapping on the detachable palm rest adds yet another three inches to the depth of the keyboard is the G19′s designers token nod to ergonomics. You can elevate the top of the keyboard by flipping a pair of peg legs, but the keys themselves are straight as an arrow, flat as a pancake. Some gamers prefer this type of design, others prefer a split in the middle which allows their wrists rest on a more natural angle.
Logitech wisely did not tamper with the traditional look, while adding their new keys though. Your fingers find the function keys where they expect to be, the Insert, Home, Delete, End, Page up and Page-down keys are in their usual two-row block, and arrow keys are in reverse their familiar “T”. The Enter, Backspace, Shift and Caps Lock keys are sufficiently large, and there’s a numeric keypad on the right start.
Logitech half set of 12 function keys labeled G1 through G12 on the left side of the keyboard, however. Each button can be programmed using three custom macros, so a key can also set up 36 test signals sent to the computer. Custom macros can be recorded on the fly, or you can use the included PC software (buy software online) to keystrokes, macros, scripts or functions (calculator, web browser, email, etc.) to be allocated to each G-key. You can then save these configurations as profiles that are automatically loaded when an application is started (if that is still ongoing matter what app is running).
Logitech has also specialized profiles for more than 60 games including Command & Conquer 3, Crysis, Fallout 3, World of Warcraft and World in Conflict, which consists of pre-recorded macros that can be assigned to one of the G-keys. If you’re playing Crysis, for example, your left hand a short distance to activate your night vision, switching from the gunner seat of a vehicle to its driver’s seat, or perform any other actions of the 45 games. We felt we were able to perform these actions with the G19 much faster than we could with a traditional keyboard where the jobs are allocated to all the letter keys on the keyboard. On our right and we never take off our mouse (left-handed may have a different experience).

The keyboard keys can be illuminated by three color choices, green, blue and violet are available at a button. If you do not like one of these colors, you can create your own from a seemingly infinite palette. Oddly enough you can not disable the LCD without turning off the key backlight.
The novelty of having a display integrated into the keyboard disappears quickly. The tiltable LCD screen is sharp, bright, colorful, and provides a good resolution for its size (320 x 240 pixels). Logitech has a number of applications, but none that would not work better on the much larger display that’s right for you.
The clock / calendar, stopwatch, and CPU utilization monitor are quite useful, but the YouTube client, photos and video viewers, POP3 monitor, and RSS-feed program amounts to a lot of flash and little substance. And as you probably guessed, the LCD screen draws more power than one USB port can deliver, so keyboard comes with its own supplementary feeding. This sleek wall wart does not consume more than the allocated space on the socket, but not enough juice to provide the two-keyboard USB hub to power our gluttonous while Western Digital Passport 250GB Portable Hard Drive, either.
Gamers have cursed the Windows menu key, since it was way back when Duke Nukem 3D was everyone’s favorite first-person shooter entered. The G19 has a handy switch that deactivates it, so your games will not be interrupted while you reach for something else. We also like the built-in transport controls for Window Media Player, the volume wheel barrel, and the handy mute button (which is something that should be on every keyboard!)
Not everybody likes the G19 is mushy key action as distasteful as we did, so we can not let that weigh too heavily in our bottom-line advice. The price / performance ratio, on the other hand, is just way out of whack. As much as we like keyboard gaming-oriented features, the LCD just does not add enough value to justify the exorbitant price tag.
