Sound quality is great when playing a variety of different media, including music (a mix of songs ranging from classical to rap to heavy metal), video games (“Half-Life 2: Episode 2″ and “Plants vs. Zombies”) and movies / TV shows (“The Dark Knight” and “Community”). None of the louder music or sound causes the computer speakers to distort, while subtle details sounded clear. There is also a Bass Booster switch to pump up the lows even more unlike cheap oem software. As we mentioned in the Bose Companion 2 review, the speakers may be connected to a home entertainment setup, but users would be missing from the 5.1 stereo surround experience.

M-Audio does not skimp on the number or size of drivers on the Studiophile AV 40s. Each speaker has two drivers: a 3/4-inch tweeter and a monster-sized 4-inch woofer (midrange). The highs, mid and bass sound great. According to M-Audio, the polypropylene-coated woofer, while the tweeter is ferrofluid cooled silk dome. You could accuse JBL of slack of late, having spent the last two years free just pretty standard looking speaker set-ups. But with the Creature III 2.1 speakers, it appears that period of relative inactivity has been lovingly spent honing this rather special audio system.

JBL Creature III PC Speakers Review

First things first, the Creature III speakers look great. An update on the previous Creature II design, the subwoofer looks like a sort of B-movie alien mothership and two satellite speakers disguised as separate Recon UFOs. Connecting to a 3.5 mm mini-jack, the speakers are on four claw-like feet, with the subwoofer which two chromed bass and treble controls. Available in black, white, red, gray and aluminum, there should be an appropriate color for most people interior.

All this great design would work for nothing but the sound quality is not zero. Fortunately, the Creature III speakers perform excellently, thanks to the use of Odyssey and Magnum driver units. A 75mm driver in the subwoofer gets an incredibly resonant bottom and the satellite speakers have 40mm drivers remarkable finding, retaining the clarity and the avoidance of distortion even at the surprisingly loud maximum volume.

JBL Creature III PC Speakers Review

A series of MP3s, I found the speakers to have excellent definition in the mid-and low-middle range. Vocals sometimes sounded a little hiss, but I had a clear sound to take on a muddy one every day. I also found reconciliation with the treble and bass controls are incredibly responsive, with a handy soft-lock on when they were moved to a neutral position. Also DVD playback of the POD-racing scene in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace really showed Responses range, like a few hours battling through the PC version of Dragon Age: Origins.

III The Creature speakers are not perfect, however. Volume is controlled via two capacitive-touch buttons located on one of the satellite speakers that were hypersensitive to me personally, and missed a visual prompt to the volume measure. There was also an occasional low noise at the speakers should have been silent. Minor gripes though they may be, they seem to forget problems that could easily have been addressed, and with a suggested retail price of € 99, you would expect to have done JBL.

But remember these few small issues, the JBL Creature speakers III perform remarkably well. She may be a bit pricier than the average PC 2.1 sound systems, but rest assured that the attractive design and excellent sound quality are well worth the money.

The Logitech Z-5500 Digital has an impressive assortment of jacks that allow you to connect up to six devices simultaneously at the source. The control module rear panel offers optical and coaxial digital audio inputs, as well as three 1/8-inch analog minijack inputs. You configure the three mini jacks as a group to a 5.1-channel PC sound card to connect or disconnect to connect to three separate stereo sources. The control module contains a panel 1/8-inch headphone output and a 1/8-inch auxiliary input for playing a device such as an iPod. We’ve seen home audio receivers with fewer inputs – a testament to the flexibility of this setup.

All four identical satellite speakers and matching (although horizontally oriented) center speaker include desk stands that run and easy to convert into wall mounts. Each of the speakers include a 3-inch driver as opposed to the dual-driver, two-way designs, but the performance does not suffer not.

Logitech claims that the system is a very impressive 505 watts (RMS), with 62 watts to each satellite, 69 watts dedicated to the center, and 188 watts allocated to the behemoth 10-inch subwoofer driver outputs. Although the sub, which houses the amplifier system is a front-firing type, a large bass port contributes to the occasional tendency to carelessness. As a point of comparison, the Z-680 uses a smaller 8-inch sub driver but had the same amount of amplifier power.

The Z-5500 subwoofer is larger and more powerful than most home-theater subs, and the benefits of its brawn are clear when you fire an intense game or DVD. For example, during a fierce firefight in Unreal Tournament 2004, missiles impacted the ground with palpable force heavily armored vehicles thundering lumbered across the battlefield. The Jurassic Park DVD’s Tyrannosaurus rex scene proved no less exciting, with the giant dinosaur footprints send shockwaves through our office.

Logitech Z-5500 Speaker System Review

The satellite speakers do a surprisingly good job with treble, music sounds very fresh and three-dimensional. Midrange system is perhaps the greatest weakness due to a somewhat striking discrepancy between the subwoofer and satellites.

Other than the very high price, there is not much to dislike about the Logitech Z-5500 Digital 5.1 speakers. Recognition of Z-680′s success, Logitech wisely chosen to not reinvent the wheel to find here, instead focus on aesthetic updates and a few additional inputs. If it could clean up the midrange and the occasional messy bass, these speakers a resounding success.

The $ 169 Z-2300 offers 200 watts of total RMS power, 80 watts RMS (2 x 40 watts) in eight ohms at 10 kHz at a percent THD (total harmonic distortion) for the satellites and 120 watts RMS in eight ohm at 100 Hz to 10 percent THD (total harmonic distortion) for the subwoofer. Logitech claims a signal to noise ratio greater than 100dB at 1kHz and a frequency of 35 Hz – 20 kHz (although with no +/- dB spec, which basically tells the story – it can technically play up to 20kHz, but you can not hear, it does not bode well).

Buyers should remember that audio specifications rarely represent real-world conditions, they are only a short overview of the performance of a product offering under stable conditions. Once you click “Play” and the material begins making demands on the product, the real specs usually differ.

The Z-2300 also offers THX certification, which basically means that it passed a general set of specs that many designs could still pass without playing politics and paying the fee to Lucasfilm. However, the badge means a lot for marketing purposes, particularly in the small world of desktop-speaker audio.

The 6.75-inch long, 3.5-inch wide and six inches deep satellites use a 2.5-inch polished aluminum phase plug driver with a port on top. As the only driver in the satellites, the phase plug driver to reproduce all of the mid and high frequencies for the subwoofer takes over. This often proves more difficult than with dual-driver designs. The 11 x 11 x 15-inch (HxWxD) subwoofer has an eight-inch long-throw woofer, ported.

Sound

The Z-2300 playing loudly, which will benefit from the many types of content including movies and games. The subwoofer packs a nice punch, although the forward-firing woofer means you can have a location where a leg does not block or side-firing port to find. The subwoofer into account the increase in the subwoofer volume control, but at the extremes, a bit clipped and distorted. General, the subwoofer provided good performance, considering the price. The overall quality of the remote volume controls can also be improved, but when considering the price, it’s hard to argue.

The satellites offered more of a mixed bag. The single driver could not reproduce the full range of frequencies sufficient to create slightly rolled-off highs and a midrange hardly acceptable. A clear sonic gap existed between the satellites and subwoofer, indicating a lower crossover point that the satellites simply could not cope. The satellites also exhibited Fri directional characteristics, which means it should be away from the listening position, the sound significantly degraded. Keep this in mind when preparing the balance between overall sound quality, imaging and soundstaging.

Conclusion

For the money, the Z-2300 offers a good mix of benefits. The Logitech system provides good sound quality for movies and games, a nice set of useful features and some sharp cosmetics. In a world where downloads have control over the music business and are quick to take over for DVDs as the best way to buy and own movies, your computer must have a good speakers and the Logitech Z-2300 could be just what the doctor ordered .
