Long before anyone ever heard of an iPad, Archos churning media-centric touchscreen devices that, although not very popular, well-designed. Although the company stabbing at a Windows 7 slate flopped, the company has a range of Android tablets, 2.8″ (really, a tablet only in name) all the way up to 10 inches. The Archos 101 is the top-of-the-line model, and it is the thinnest and lightest 10-inch tablet on the market with a capacitive screen. It also offers HDMI output and a front-facing camera. Although the Archos 101 is far from perfect, it is a fixed value priced alternative to Apple’s device.
You could be forgiven if at first glance, you confused the Archos 101 for the older Archos 9 Tablet PC. With the exception of a few buttons, the two devices are nearly identical in appearance. The chassis is made of a black plastic but the screen is bordered by black brushed aluminum, as are two panels on the back. Despite its thinness, the Archos 101 has a solid look and feel than the Viewsonic Tablet G.
With an area of 10.6 x 5.9 cm, the Archos 101 takes almost the same amount of space at the Archos 9, and the Viewsonic Tablet G. However, the Archos 101 is just 0.47 inches thick, compared with 0.7 inches for the Archos 9 and 0.5 inches for the G Tablet. The Archos 101 weighs only 1.1 pounds, a good deal lighter than 1.55 cancels the G-tablet, not to mention the Archos 9′s 1.8-pound bulk. Plus, the 101′s tapered sides make it as light as it feels.

Unlike the Archos 9, there are no physical buttons on the face of the Archos 101. All of the 101 ports and buttons on the left, from the top, there’s a volume rocker, power, headphones, USB, microUSB, microSD card slot and a mini-HDMI port. At the bottom of all this is a port for the plug, the only way you can 101. We wish you could just use a USB port. On the left of the screen is a VGA webcam.
On the back is an adjustable kickstand that makes it easy to prop up the 101 on a desk, it is so handy we wish all models have this feature.
While the 1-GHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor and OpenGL ES 2.0 3D graphics accelerator in the Archos 101 be able to keep up with all our tasks reasonably well, we noticed a lag time. For example, the tablet took 5 seconds to start the app gallery and 4 seconds for the multitasking menu while playing music in the background. On the positive side, the accelerometer was quick to recognize when we turned the unit.
In the Linpack benchmark, which measures how many calculations the processor can do in a certain time, the Archos 101 scored 10.26, which defeated the Viewsonic ViewPad 7 (7.5) but was also behind the Samsung Galaxy Tab (13), using makes a 1-GHz processor Hummingbird, and the ViewSonic Tablet G (36.6), which Nvidia’s Tegra CPU has 2.

An3DBench in which 3D graphics performance measures, the Archos 101 also behind the pack, scoring only 4200 to the category average of 6575, the Galaxy Tab notched a high-class 7123.
Despite its ultra-slim profile, the Archos 101 has excellent endurance. Our Laptop Battery test (web surfing via Wi-Fi), the unit took only about 11 hours. Archos estimates that the 101 should last up to 10 hours surfing the web, to 7 hours of video playback and up to 36 hours music playback.
Conclusion
Among 10-inch tablets Android, the Archos 101 is the slimmest, most robust, and $ 320 ($ 365 for the 16GB version), the highest value so far. However, that does not mean we do not have reservations. For such a large screen, the viewing angles are narrow. You also get no access to all Google Apps or the Android Market, and the more expensive Galaxy Tab offers faster performance but you have to buy software online. Still, with 8GB of storage, two USB ports, HDMI, and a long battery life, Archos delivers good bang for your buck.
