HP’s new professional series of ZR monitors offer some very strong values for those looking for a high accuracy color monitors. The ZR22w is the smallest and most affordable of the series with a 21.5-inch screen. This makes it one of the most affordable to the IPS panel display technology that provides higher levels of color and a larger use. The panel also uses the 16:9 aspect ratio, together with higher resolution 1920×1080 to give a slight edge over many other similar sized displays that can not reach the full HD 1080p video resolutions.
One of the biggest problems with many new LCD monitors, the brightness out of the box. The brightness of the ZR22w are more subdued with only a 210 cd/m2 figure compared with 300 to 400, many 22 to 24 inch monitors. This has the advantage of preventing the whites from overwhelming the user and does not require that it be rejected for the most effective color range to get. While the larger ZR monitors use LED lights, the ZR22w uses a more traditional CFL backlight.

In terms of color, ZR22w has some excellent color out of the box with the IPS panel. Those doing serious graphics work will still want a color calibration tool to the highest level of color accuracy. After using my calibration tool, the color shifted slightly higher levels in the green, but many would probably not be able to tell the difference easily. It should be noted that the black levels were a bit warmer than some other 22-inch displays to offer deeper blacks.
Like its bigger sibling, the HP ZR22w offers a wide range of connections including DisplayPort, DVI and VGA, but not with one of the most common HDMI. This is probably the most popular digital interface for laptop computers and even desktops. It would have been nice to include HP in this connection.

HP sells the ZR-series of monitors and very green with 25% recycled consumer waste used in production and 85% efficient power adapters. In my testing, ZR22w consumes about 25 to 30 watts at full strength and just 2 watts in sleep mode. The case of the ZR22w is much thinner than the ZR24w model and also feels a bit firmer, but it still consists mainly of plastic.
While the HP ZR22w is certainly more expensive than many consumer level 22-inch LCDs, the panel is just too big of a deal for those seeking a high quality display with exceptional color to get. It may not be the same color range as more expensive professional models, but it’s a great deal for graphics professionals and consumers.
Conclusion
HP’s ZR22w is one of the most affordable 22-inch class displays to an IPS panel that provides with some excellent color and viewing angles offer. The panel includes full support for 1080p HD video and uses an anti-glare coating instead of more glossy coatings. It’s just a shame that HP decided not to an HDMI connector on the screen to take.
